Anais & I

August 16th, 2011

Anais & I was born of Jane D’Haene’s desire to design comfortable yet stylish clothes for her daughter, Anaïs, who has been her partner in the whole process from the beginning, testing each item and putting in her two cents. She now designs boys clothes with her two boys in mind of course. A former architect/interior designer, Jane likes simple design but with great detail. So do we and we are really loving her Fall/Winter 2011 collection, especially this deer print dress with the tulle peeking out from underneath, sporty stripes for the boys and the super cute medallion print cape. (I also love that she gave her daughter a French name with an accent like I gave my daughter, Solène!) Check her website for a list of stockists.

I discovered Kicokids at Playtime and was more than delighted at their eclectic use of fabrics, patterns and motifs for their Summer 2012 range. And here’s some of their Autumn/Winter 2011 range – again surprising and charming. Designers Tia and Kitty have a recipe of global, quirky, avant-garde and playful and we love the result. Love the rustic mood of these photos too and I seriously want this dress above for my daughters and myself! They have an online store and many stockists. Check their website.

Je Suis En CP! French Label

August 16th, 2011

What a fresh breath of air this French brand Je Suis en CP! is. The translation is more or less,  “I’m in Preschool”. They make simple and fresh classic clothes which remind me of lazy days in the French countryside. All of their clothes are comfortable with a touch of nostalgia and innocence. And their Summer 2012 collection (pictured) carries on this tradition. I really thought this rust dress with the sewn on purse which is actually a pocket was so cute. Check their website for stockists around the world.

Fashion Week Begins With Pale Cloud

August 14th, 2011

This week is Fashion Week on Bellissima Kids and I’ll be showcasing many of the exciting labels I encountered at Playtime and ENK Children’s Trade Fairs a couple of weeks ago. So, keep checking for sneakpeeks of the coming seasons of my pick of great labels.

We start the series with these glimpses of Fall/Winter 2011 from Pale Cloud, a couture label with lovely Norwegian designer Marion Reynolds at the helm. As the name suggests, Pale Cloud features primarily delicate colors, delicate fabrics and beautifully detailed touches with superior construction. I am in love with this white cotton/silk Dalia Dress above. My little girl, and any little girl would look just like…well, a little flower in that. And the good news is that Pale Cloud opens their online store very soon.

Frederick By Leo Lionni

August 13th, 2011

We are huge fans of Leo Lionni in this house and Frederick and His Friends is a compilation of four great stories: Frederick, Swimmy, Fish is Fish, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. 3 of these stories won the Caldecott prize But the story of Frederick is our fave. I take ages to turn the pages as I love admiring the masterly collage illustrations. Such a quirky little tale of the poet field mouse who doesn’t prepare for winter by gathering food and straw like his siblings, but stocks up on sunlight, colors and words. He even leads the other mice through a guided meditation when they run out of food. A nice message about the importance of what it is that artists contribute to society.

Water Balloon Installation In Public Park

August 12th, 2011

This is the first in a series of art projects I am undertaking with children in public places. This water balloon installation is entitled “Jellybean Pool”. The kids and I worked hard on filling over 300 balloons, or as Oona says, “bloons”. I was quite amazed at their diligence because folks, this piece of art took hours. I just love the way the sun came out at the right moment and shone right on it and made the balloons glisten like gemstones. The white ones looked like light bulbs. Now if only I could get paid for these projects, I will have found my dream job!

Below we have my diehard helpers.

And now for the really fun part – destroying them all. Even baby Solène got in on the action.

Aioty NYC

August 11th, 2011

I love this bold brand I discovered at ENK Children’s Trade Show last weekend. Designer, Shogo Natsawa mixes it up with vintage and vintage-inspired fabrics and gorgeous Jersey pieces in rich jewel tones. The collection has a one-of-a-kind, bohemian feeling. I love the mismatched patterns. I also love that pouty little model. Believe it or not, I have been passing the Aioty showroom (on Broadway right across from The Strand Bookstore) for quite a while now and never knew it housed such beautiful clothes. Here is their website but unfortunately, you can’t purchase anything from it yet but you can find out which shops carry them. Another reason to make that trip to New York that you were planning.

Umi Boys Summer Sandals

August 11th, 2011

I wish I had a little boy just so I could put these trendy sandals on those little feet. Love these summer Keelbacks by Umi so much, I’m tempted to put them on my little girl. Okay, so maybe not. Wouldn’t want her complaining to her shrink later on that her Mama dressed her in boy’s clothes…

Molly’s Cupcakes – Greenwich Village

August 11th, 2011

I feel like an intrepid reporter with this one as this place opened just three days ago on Bleecker St. near 6th Ave. in Greenwich Village. They have quite a reputation already in Chicago, where the first Molly’s is. Chicago Magazine judged their Red Velvet cupcake the best in Chicago. Johnny, the owner, opened Molly’s in honor of his third grade teacher, Miss Molly, who would bake cupcakes for the children on their birthdays. My kind of  teacher. That’s where the school theme comes from with these fun playground swing seats and lunchboxes. I especially love this Bionic Woman lunchbox – I seriously wanted to be her when I was a kid. I guess I still do. The great thing is that you can build your own cupcakes or buy them ready-made. And they make any cupcake into a full-blown cake at your whim and also do wedding cakes. Apart from the cupcakes they have home-made ice-cream and many other cookies, brownies, pies, cheesecakes… No shortage here for sweet tooths. There is also quite a selection of games so you can linger a while if you like. We will be spending serious time here once the rains come.
